I have done many independent films and today’s rehearsal reminded me of one inherent difference between stage and screen. When you’re on camera, you are often touching shoulders with the other actor, i.e. in a two shot, or practically touching noses in a scene where two actors are speaking to each other; this looks perfectly normal on camera. Actually, if the actors aren’t super close to each other; inches apart look like miles on screen. Stage is the opposite. Distance creates interest and tension between the actors. For me it is particularly true because I want to go to the other actor and won’t allow myself to. And that also happens to be totally correct for the character who needs to connect but is unable to take the risk to go there.
